ABOUT THE USMC CFT
This USMC CFT calculator uses official 2026 scoring standards to give you an instant Combat Fitness Test score across all three events. The CFT runs July through December each year and measures functional fitness under conditions that simulate battlefield demands. Unlike the PFT's focus on general fitness, the CFT tests strength, speed, and endurance in tasks a Marine might actually face in combat. All three events are performed in a single session in full combat utility uniform.
SCORE CLASSIFICATIONS
THE EVENTS
An all-out 880-yard run simulating a sprint to a combat objective. Marines start from a standing position and must complete the distance as fast as possible on a flat, measured course. This event tests raw speed and anaerobic capacity.
- —Start on command from a standing position — no crouching
- —Course must be flat, measured, and free of significant obstacles
- —No lanes required — Marines may run freely within the course boundaries
- —Time stops when the Marine crosses the finish line
Marines lift a 30-pound ammunition can from shoulder height to full overhead arm extension as many times as possible in two minutes. Simulates the sustained physical demand of resupplying ammunition in a combat scenario.
- —Start position: ammo can at shoulder height, elbows at or below shoulder level
- —Full lockout required at the top — arms must reach complete extension overhead
- —The can must return to shoulder height between reps — bouncing off the chest is not authorized
- —Two-minute time limit — monitor calls the start and stop
A 300-yard functional fitness course replicating combat movement under fire. Includes sprinting, crawling, casualty drags, fireman carries, ammo can carries, and a simulated grenade throw. The most technically demanding CFT event.
- —Grenade must hit the designated target — misses require a re-throw before continuing
- —Buddy drag: grasp both forearms of the simulated casualty and drag 10 yards
- —Fireman carry: casualty must be carried over one shoulder for 65 yards
- —Any form violation or missed task element results in a time penalty

| 04 | Sprint + Carry | Sprint then carry two 30 lb ammo cans | 75 yds |
| 05 | Buddy drag | Drag simulated casualty across ground | 10 yds |
| 06 | Fireman carry | Carry casualty over shoulder | 65 yds |
| 07 | Grenade throw | Throw simulated grenade into target (must hit) | 22.5 ft |
| 08 | Sprint finish | Sprint back to start/finish line | ~75 yds |
TRAINING TIPS
MTC — explosive speed
- –880 yards is an anaerobic event — train with 200m and 400m max-effort intervals
- –Hill sprints build the power needed for the first acceleration phase
- –Practice in boots — the CFT is conducted in full CUFT uniform
- –Run the course or a measured equivalent before test day to set a pace target
Ammo lift endurance
- –Practice the exact motion: strict military press pattern, no push press
- –High-rep dumbbell shoulder press 3x/week builds the specific endurance needed
- –Pace the first 90 seconds — going out too fast causes early failure
- –Breathing rhythm matters: exhale on press up, inhale on the way down
MUOF preparation
- –Walk the full course before test day — understand every transition
- –The fireman carry is the most taxing segment — train it weekly
- –Practice the grenade throw — a miss costs significant time on a re-throw
- –Low and high crawl form can be drilled cheaply and frequently indoors
CFT day strategy
- –Full CUFT uniform is required — blouses may be removed only with CO authorization
- –All three events completed in a single session with regulated rest between
- –Hydrate aggressively — CFT in summer heat (July–Dec window) is taxing
- –Know form standards cold before test day — form failures cause penalties or re-dos
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What uniform do I wear for the CFT?+
Full Combat Utility Uniform (CUFT) — without body armor or load-bearing equipment. Blouses may only be removed with explicit Commanding Officer authorization. This differs from the PFT, which uses PT gear.
What happens if I miss the grenade throw target?+
You must re-throw before continuing the course. There is no limit to the number of attempts, but every re-throw costs time on the clock. Practicing the throw in training is worth the investment.
Can I rest during the ammunition lift?+
You may pause at any point, but the clock continues running. Putting the ammo can down resets your rep count for that set — you must return it to shoulder height and continue. Strategic pacing within the two minutes is critical.
Does the CFT affect my composite score like the PFT?+
Yes — up to 100 composite points, the same weight as the PFT. Both tests together account for up to 200 of your composite score points, making them two of the highest-value factors within your direct control.
When is the CFT window?+
July 1 through December 31 each calendar year. The PFT covers January through June. All active duty and SMCR/AR reservists must complete both annually.
What is the MUOF time penalty for form violations?+
Specific penalty times are assessed by the CFT monitor per MCO 6100.13A. Missing the grenade target requires a re-throw (no fixed penalty — time lost in execution). Other form violations may result in a fixed time addition to your recorded score.
